The aging brain in the News

The Aging Brain in the News We have all heard of Alzheimer's. It is a disease we all dread. The rate of Alzheimer's has risen significantly in the US to around 5.4 million. This number is projected to double by 2040, according to the Alzheimer's Association. We have been hearing for a long time that Alzheimer's disease is associated with blood sugar. In fact I have heard it coined as Type III diabetes. There was a large study conducted in Japan reported that people with diabetes are twice as l...

drug shortages…..what can we do ?

So there is a lot in the news about the recent drug shortages. Of course as a patent for a drug expires it goes generic and other companies can now manufacture it, and the price drops significantly. OK that is business. These drug companies spend $200-300 million to run their studies so they need to recoup their costs. I am ok with that. What I am not ok with is new drugs that have one minor variation of the old drug so that they get a new patent and then reduce the supply of the old drug so y...

Multiple vitamin study

I am sure some of you saw the multiple vitamin study in the news that said that taking a multiple vitamin might increase risk of death in women who take them. Well that got my attention until I read the study. A total of 38,772 older women were included in the analysis. Women were aged between 55 to 69 years, with an average of 61.6 years at the beginning of the study in 1986. This was Self-reported data on vitamin supplement use from 1986, 1997, and 2004. If you look at the study a couple of th...

medicinal mushrooms and cancer

Medicinal mushrooms have some of the most potent remedial compounds found in nature, and they are starting to be recognized in Western society for their great wellness properties. Interestingly enough, humans are more closely related to fungi than to any other kingdom, including plants, protozoans, and bacteria, and we have developed similar defenses against mutual disease-causing enemies. The idea is that because fungi and animals suffer from many of the same diseases, fungal medicines are acti...

Do we really need to take Supplements?

this beautiful article from my summer intern Kaslin Daniels People assume that if they eat healthfully, there is no need for supplemental vitamins or multi-vitamins. Although this is ideal and may have been true at one time, it is naïve to believe that you can get all the nutrients you need just in your food with the way food is manufactured now. While a small percentage of people are able to grow and pick their own produce, the majority relies on processing, canning, and freezing methods to pr...

Are hCG diets harming people?

I am sure I am not the only person concerned about the use of hCG and cancer. I have done a lot of reading on this subject for a couple of reasons, 1. my patients are asking about and it. 2. it just does not seem Naturopathic to me to starve someone (500 calories per day by any definition is in the starvation mode) then give them a hormone that is increased in a proliferative situation like pregnancy?? What happened to good nutrition, exercise, blood sugar control etc. Starvation diet with hCG j...

More benefits shown for fish oil

Further Research on the Benefits of Omega-3 Fatty Acid There is little to debate about the benefits of omega-3 fatty acids anymore. Fish oil in the news

Fish oil was in the news again. A small study on lung cancer patients shows fish oil to reduce muscle wasting and weight loss, from chemotherapy. There are hundreds of studies on fish oil. I use cod liver oil from deep sea cod because there are less toxins in the deep sea. It has the omega three fatty acids we need. They are called essential fatty acids because the body can not make them. Omega threes have both EPA and DHA. Cod liver oil has a good amount of both. I give every patient fish oil b...

The most important thing you can do for your health is free

I have attended 4 oncology conferences in the last 3 months. Learned all the latest chemotherapy, and neutraceutical approaches to treating cancer. All the billions of dollars spent on research to try and improve outcomes and the study that shows the best outcomes and reduced recurrence rates the most is ..... exercise and weight loss. It far outweighs any other therapy. The hard part is the studies showed you have to exercise 1 hour per day aerobical...
