Melatonin and Coronavirus

A number of studies indicate that melatonin may be useful for preventing and mitigating infection by the novel coronavirus that is currently terrorizing the world. The reason for this is melatonin indirectly regulates ACE2 receptors, which are the same receptors that the virus uses to get into the host cell. Think of ACE2 receptor as the lock in the door and Covid-19 as the key that opens door to get into your cells. The respiratory system is abundant in this particular receptor which is why this disease so dramatically impacts the lungs, ACE2 receptors are also abundant throughout the heart, arteries, intestines, liver, and kidneys which explains why people with COVID-19 are showing damage to these organs. If these receptors were able to be down-regulated, it would prevent the virus from gaining access to you.

Melatonin is something we make naturally to control our normal biorhythms and to prepare us for a healthy sleep cycle. One of the reasons we are seeing higher rates of severe Covid-19 in older people is because our melatonin production declines with age (this is also why sleep is a problem for many of our elders).

Research shows melatonin has many anti-cancer effects in very high doses for some cancers. It is relatively safe and already being used widely for sleep problems. However, Melatonin is not right for everyone. With any supplement, it is not without possible side effects. I use Melatonin therapeutically, along with other natural remedies with some of my cancer patients. I work with my patients to evaluate if melatonin is right for them. I have a Covid- 19 protocol to decrease the chance of getting the virus by focusing on the immune system, diet, digestion, blood sugar control and ultimately reducing inflammation in the body. Additionally, everyone knows we need to choose safe behaviors such as wearing masks in public, washing hands, and social distancing.

If you are interested in taking control to improve your health and protect yourself during these trying times, please make an appointment. We will assess your health and risk factors not just for Covid, but for all morbidity. We will take a proactive approach to your health. The only person in charge of your health is you; my job is to teach you how to take care of yourself.

Please let me know if I can help.
