Learning more about Covid -19

Everyday it seems we learn more and become more confused as to what the Covid-19 is. Apparently, it can attack any part of the body. Today a story of someone who had the gastrointestinal symptoms and then all of a sudden, a fever of 105 and oxygen levels dropping dangerously low to the point that intubation was required. Children with a rash and high fever. One common thread seems to be the inflammation of the blood vessels called vasculitis and blood clots. So, it would seem those that already...

Melatonin and Coronavirus

A number of studies indicate that melatonin may be useful for preventing and mitigating infection by the novel coronavirus that is currently terrorizing the world. The reason for this is melatonin indirectly regulates ACE2 receptors, which are the same receptors that the virus uses to get into the host cell. Think of ACE2 receptor as the lock in the door and Covid-19 as the key that opens door to get into your cells. The respiratory system is abundant in this particular receptor which is why th...

Fever is our friend during Covid 19

Well this weekend I went grocery shopping 7 am Sunday morning trying to avoid the crowds. My first stop was Fred Meyer. Much to my surprise there was a crowd. People are stocking up. One of the shelves that was empty was the Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory area (ibuprofen, acetaminophen, etc.).  It made me wonder if the run on NSAIDs was for people in pain or for those that get the flu with fever.   Fever is our friend.  Our body brings up our temperature w...

A Case for Prevention

Cheeseburgers at a White House picnic in 2018. Alex Edelman/Getty Images A recent article in the New York Times talks about the health care debate and how we should be doing prevention with a healthy diet to reduce health care spending.  It makes a wonderful point: we have a great sick care system in the US but we need to focus on health care and prevention.  I highly recommend reading this editorial - even if it's simply to better communicate why you choose to proactively manage your health...

Muscle Mass, Body Fat and Breast Cancer Survival

Thoughts on a recent observational study performed by Kaiser Permanente and Dana Farber on Breast Cancer Survival. According to the results published in JAMA Oncology on April 5th 2018, muscle characteristics appear to be "important predictors of survival" for those who have breast cancer. Patients who had sarcopenia (diminished muscle mass) were 41 percent less likely to have survived than those who did not. Patients with the highest amount of adipose tissue (i.e. body fat) were also lin...

The three-phased approach to complementary cancer care

My three-phased approach to a healthy garden (also a great way to understand complementary cancer care). Phase 1 - Identify factors that allowed cancer to grow in the first place. Cancer is a multifactorial disease. I see some common threads. I liken the body to a garden and cancer cells as weeds in the garden. We are all making some weeds every day; the question is, why is the garden letting the weeds take over to form tumors? At Journey to Wellness, we treat the multiple facto...
